Standard of Care
In 2015 the following institutions implemented PGx Testing: Cornell, Columbia, Georgetown and Harvard, Mayo Clinic, Stanford and Vanderbilt, just to name a few. The information that PGx testing provides us with today make it nearly impossible to ignore the many areas of life and business that can be achieved/improved through the use of genetic and metabolic testing.
Problem
There are over 2 million ADR hospitalizations each year. And, there are over 100,000 avoidable ADR deaths per year. That equates to somewhere close to 1 avoidable death every 5 minutes. The FDA states there are in excess of $136 Billion of avoidable annual costs for ADR's. In addition there are over 350,000 nursing home ADR's per year. The FDA study concluded that over 50% of 3,695 hospitalized patient episodes for ADR's could have been avoided.
Odds
The more drugs a patient is taking the more chances there are of an ADR. For instance, the average Medicare patient takes 5-8 drugs per day. Over 50% of nursing home patients take 5 or more drugs and placed on at least 1 psychiatric drug with in two weeks. Some Medicare patients take as high as 20 drugs per day. Patients taking over 11 drugs per day have a 96% chance of an ADR.
